Dolichozygus was named by Cooper (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 882]. It is extant. Its type is Terebratula stearnsi.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tichosininae by Williams et al. (2006).
