Ammonites layeri was named by Hauer (1847).

It was recombined as Pinacoceras layeri by von Mojsisovics (1873); it was recombined as Pinacoceras (Pompeckjites) layeri by von Mojsisovics (1902); it was recombined as Pompeckjites layeri by Spath (1934) and Spath (1951).
