Taxonomy
Orthoceras austriacum was named by von Mojsisovics (1873). Its type specimen is GBA 1873/005/0007, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Someraukogel, beds with Arcestes globus, which is in an Alaunian carbonate limestone in the Halstatt Formation of Austria.
It was recombined as Trematoceras austriacum by Schastlivtseva (1988).
