Phylloceras aulonotum was named by Herbich (1878). It is the type species of Schistophylloceras.
It was recombined as Rhacophyllites aulonotus by Vadász (1908); it was recombined as Schistophylloceras aulonotum by Hyatt (1900), Rakús (1993) and Tomas and Pálfy (2007).
