Epithyris was named by Phillips (1841) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath-u Sepkoski's reference number: 882]. Its type is Terebratula maxillata.

It was reranked as Terebratula (Epithyris) by Deslongchamps (1873).

It was assigned to Terebratula by Deslongchamps (1873); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Postepithyrididae by Williams et al. (2006).
