Ammonites galeiformis was named by Hauer (1849).

It was replaced with Joannites deschmanni by von Mojsisovics (1882); it was recombined as Arcestes galeiformis by von Mojsisovics (1875), von Mojsisovics (1902) and Spath (1951).
