Gacina was named by Stehli (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: D l C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 400,538]. Its type is Gacina moorefieldensis.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cryptonellinae by Williams et al. (2006).
