Gwynia was named by King (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 8]. It is extant. Its type is Gwynia capsula. It is the type genus of Gwynioidea.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gwynioidea by Williams et al. (2006).
