Taxonomy
Ammonites coangustatus was named by Hauer (1860). It is the type species of Sphingites.

It was recombined as Arcestes coangustatus by von Mojsisovics (1875); it was recombined as Sphingites coangustatus by von Mojsisovics (1902) and Spath (1951).
