Heterobrochus was named by Cooper (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm Sepkoski's reference number: 882]. Its type is Heterobrochus incultus. It is the type genus of Heterobrochinae.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Heterobrochinae by Williams et al. (2006).
