Inversithyris was named by Dagys (1968) [Sepkoski's age data: J Aale J Call Sepkoski's reference number: 1098]. Its type is Inversithyris rhomboidalis.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Triadithyrididae by Williams et al. (2006).
