Orthoceras maclareni was named by Murchison (1859) [Orthoceras Maclareni Salter in Murchison 1859]. Its type specimen is BGS GSM 105378-80, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Geisonoceras maclareni by Holland (2000).
