Notonecta primaeva was named by Von Heyden (1859). It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Rott (Krantz Bonn coll), which is in a MP 30 lacustrine - large shale in the Rott Formation of Germany.
It was recombined as Clematina primaeva by Popov (1964).
