Orthoceras nummularius was named by de Sowerby and Murchison (1839). Its type specimen is BMNH C3501, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Actinoceras nummularium by Foord (1888); it was recombined as Armenoceras nummularium by Holland (1998).
