Kingena was named by Davidson (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-l K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1,8,538]. It is the type genus of Kingeninae, Kingenidae.

It was reranked as Terebratula (Kingena) by Peron (1895).

It was assigned to Terebratula by Peron (1895); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kingeninae by Williams et al. (2006).
