Lenothyris was named by Dagys (1968) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Lenothyris perflexus.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Triadithyrididae by Williams et al. (2006).
