Leptothyrellopsis was named by Bitner and Pisera (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 8,765,889]. Its type is Leptothyrellopsis polonicus.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Terebratellidina by Williams et al. (2007).
