Magellania was named by Bayle (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. It is extant. Its type is Terebratula flavescens. It is the type genus of Magellaniinae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Dyscritosia by Cooper (1982); it was synonymized subjectively with Syntomaria by Cooper (1982).
