Taxonomy
Maltaia was named by Cooper (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi Sepkoski's reference number: 882]. Its type is Maltaia maltensis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Terebratula by Gaetani and Sacca (1985).

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Terebratulinae by Williams et al. (2006).
