Dilophus matilei was named by Waller et al. (2000). Its type specimen is MNHN-LP-R.55220, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Dominican amber (MNHN coll), which is in a Burdigalian/Langhian terrestrial amber in the Dominican Republic.
