Orthis playfairi was named by Reed (1917).

It was recombined as Orthambonites playfairi by Reed (1917), Williams (1962) and Mitchell (1977); it was recombined as Sulevorthis playfairi by Candela and Harper (2014).

A. Williams 1962Small, subcircular to subquadrate and unequally biconvex Orthambonites with a more convex pedicle valve about nine-tenths as long as wide and less than one-third as deep as long; ornamented by fine, concentric lamellae and 13-17 angular costae, most commonly 14-16, with art average wavelength of just less than 1 mm. at 5 mm. antero-median to the dorsal umbo: ventral muscle-scar subcordate, less than two-fifths as long as adult valves; dorsal adductor field oval extending anteriorly for over onehalf the length of the brachial valve and divided by a strong, longer, median septum.
