Okathyris was named by Smirnova (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-u K Haut-l Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Okathyris chevkinensis.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Harpotothyrididae by Williams et al. (2006).
