Taxonomy
Orthothyris was named by Cooper (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: K l Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Orthothyris radiata. It is the type genus of Orthothyridinae.

It was assigned to Terebratulidae by Cooper (1955); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Orthothyridinae by Cooper (1973) and Williams et al. (2006).
