Taxonomy
Scalpellum subplanum was named by Withers (1913). Its type specimen is AR819, an other, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Calantica (Calantica) subplana by Withers (1924); it was recombined as Smilium subplanum by Buckeridge (1983).
