Neoscalpellum was named by Pilsbry (1907) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant R Sepkoski's reference number: 346]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Scalpellum (Neoscalpellum) by Withers (1926).

It was assigned to Scalpellum by Withers (1926); to Cretiscalpellinae by Buckeridge (1983); to Cirripedia by Sepkoski (2002); to Scalpellidae by Jones (2007); and to Meroscalpellinae by Chan et al. (2021).
