Taxonomy
Orbicella whitneyi was named by Wells (1932). Its type locality is Spring Branch-Cranes Mill region, Comal County, which is in an Albian reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Glen Rose Limestone Formation of Texas.

It was recombined as Latiastrea whitneyi by Baron-Szabo (2002).
