Trochocyathus (Paratrochocyathus) duncani was named by Cairns and Wells (1987). Its type locality is TU 1208 (Mao Fm, Los Quemados), which is in a Zanclean shallow subtidal siliciclastic in the Mao Formation of the Dominican Republic.
It was recombined as Trochocyathus duncani by Kiessling (2014).
