Petalothyris was named by Cooper (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 882]. Its type is Terebratula simplex.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Postepithyrididae by Williams et al. (2006).
