Pirithyris was named by Sun and Ye (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr m Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Pirithyris pius.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dielasmatinae by Williams et al. (2006).
