Platidia was named by Costa (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 8,889]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Platidiinae, Platidiidae, Platidioidea.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Platidiinae by Williams et al. (2006) and Bitner and Müller (2017).
