Venus plana was named by Sowerby (1813).

It was recombined as Cytherea plana by von Koenen (1897); it was recombined as Callistina plana by Riedel (1933); it was recombined as Aphrodina (Mesocallista) plana by Barber (1958); it was recombined as Aphrodina plana by Quarto di Palo (1970).
