Ostrea montiscaprilis was named by Klipstein (1843).

It was recombined as Ostrea (Alectryonia) montiscaprilis by von Wöhrmann (1889); it was recombined as Alectryonia montiscaprilis by Arthaber (1905); it was recombined as Lopha montiscaprilis by Newton (1923) and Jelen (1989); it was recombined as Umbrostrea montiscaprilis by Szente et al. (2010).
