Praelongithyris was named by Middlemiss (1959) [Sepkoski's age data: K Berr-u K Albi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 776]. Its type is Praelongithyris praelongiforma.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rectithyridinae by Cooper (1993) and Williams et al. (2006).
