Trilobites problematicus was named by Schlotheim (1820).

It was recombined as Palaeocrangon problematica by von Schauroth (1854); it was recombined as Prosoponiscus problematicus by Kirkby (1857) and Geinitz (1861); it was recombined as Palaeocrangon problematicus by Glaessner (1957).
