Scolopendra was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type genus of Scolopendridae.

It was assigned to Insecta by Geoffroy (1762); to Pedestria by Scopoli (1763); to Unogata by Fabricius (1775); to Aptera by Linnaeus (1758), Linnaeus (1761), Müller (1764), Schaeffer (1766), Linnaeus (1767) and Müller (1776); to Syngnatha by Latreille (1802); and to Scolopendridae by Hoffman (1969).
