Pygope was named by Link (1830) [Sepkoski's age data: J Kimm-u K Barr-l Sepkoski's reference number: 448,776]. It is the type genus of Pygopidae.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pygopinae by Williams et al. (2006) and Bujtor and Albrecht (2022).
