Taxonomy
Proetus (Astroproetus) whittardi was named by Begg (1939). Its type specimen is BG 7707 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ladyburn River, Starfish Bed, Bed No. 2, which is in a Rawtheyan marine limestone in the South Threave Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Panarchaeogonus whittardi by Owens (1974); it was synonymized subjectively with Panarchaeogonus trigodus by Owens (1978).
