Chonetes kirkbyi was named by Trechmann (1945). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ford Lime Quarry, above Chonetes woolacotti, which is in a Wuchiapingian carbonate dolomite in the Ford Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Neochonetes (Zechiella) kirkbyi by Archbold (1999).
