Silpha lapponica was named by Herbst (1793). It is extant.

It was recombined as Silpha (Thanatophilus) lapponica by Pierce (1949); it was recombined as Thanatophilus lapponicus by Miller and Peck (1979), Ashworth and Nelson (2014) and Rŭžička (2015).
