Coniontis remnans was named by Pierce (1954). Its type specimen is LACM S9092, an exoskeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rancho La Brea, Pit B (LACMIP 285), which is in a Rancholabrean tar tar in California.
