Sulcatinella was named by Dagys (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Tr Ladi Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Sulcatinella sulcata.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dielasmatinae by Williams et al. (2006).
