Ammonites stahli was named by Oppel (1856).

It was recombined as Cycloceras stahli by Fucini (1899); it was recombined as Acanthopleuroceras stahli by Thomson and Smith (1992); it was recombined as Tropidoceras stahli by Spath (1928), Meister (1986) and Meister and Friebe (2003).
