Solariella maculata was named by Wood (1842) [DISTRIBUTION: Pliocene; England.]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Solariella, Solariella (Solariella).

It was recombined as Solariella (Solariella) maculata by Squires and Goedert (1995).
