Trichothyris was named by Buckman (1917) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call J u Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538]. Its type is Dictyothyris compressa.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Loboidothyridoidea by Williams et al. (2006).
