Xenothyris was named by Jin et al. (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-u]. Its type is Xenothyris tuilaensis.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Terebrataliinae by Williams et al. (2006).
