Graptolithus bicornis was named by Hall (1847) [Lectotype chosen by Riva (1974).]. Its type specimen is A.M.N.H. 1030a and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Climacograptus bicornis by Hall (1865) and Riva (1974); it was recombined as Climacograptus (Climacograptus) bicornis by Mitchell (1987).
