Glyptosphaeritidae was named by Bernard (1895). Its type is Glyptosphaerites. It is the type family of Glyptocystitidacea.

It was assigned to Seriolata by Regnéll (1945); and to Glyptosphaeritidacea by Mergl and Prokop (2006).
