Graptolithus ramosus was named by Hall (1847). It is the type species of Climacograptus (Dicranograptus).
It was recombined as Climacograptus (Dicranograptus) ramosus by Hall (1865); it was recombined as Dicranograptus ramosus by Ruedemann (1908).
