Swantonia was named by Walcott (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Boto-u Cm Tojo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 19,1050]. Its type is Camerella antiquata.

It was assigned to Naukatidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Articulata by Sepkoski (2002).
