Taxonomy
Sauroidichnites barrattii was named by Hitchcock (1837). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is AC 1/1, 1/7, a footprint, and it is a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Sauropus barrattii by Hitchcock (1845), Lull (1915), Lull (1917), Bock (1952), Lull (1953), Baird (1954), Kuhn (1963), Haubold (1969) and Thulborn and Wade (1984); it was recombined as Anomoepus barrattii by Hitchcock (1848); it was recombined as Chimaera barrattii by Hitchcock (1858); it was recombined as Chimaerichnus barratti by Hitchcock (1871); it was recombined as Chimaerichnus barrattii by Hitchcock (1889) and Hitchcock (1898); it was recombined as Chimaera barratti by Lyman (1894); it was synonymized subjectively with Anomoepus intermedius by Lull (1904); it was recombined as Sauropus (Sauroidichnites) barrattii by Haubold (1971); it was misspelled as Sauroidichnites barratti by Miller (1879); it was considered a nomen vanum by Gierlinski (1996).
